Rice Hulls - Castle Malting
Rice husks, also known as BIORIZ, are the tough, outer shell that naturally encases rice grains. Used in brewing, these husks are steam-sterilized to enhance their durability and make them ideal for filtering liquids like wort in beer production. Their fibrous, cellulosic structure is perfect for creating a filtration layer, while being entirely GMO-free and derived from Italian rice. Stored carefully, rice husks offer a long shelf life and provide a neutral pH, making them a valuable, eco-friendly option for various brewing needs.
- Wort Colour: Neutral
- Usage: Filtration aid for wort and other food liquids
- Beer Styles: Ideal for adjunct and high-protein grain recipes
Description
What is Rice Husk?
Rice husks are the hard, outer shell of rice grains, traditionally used as an agricultural by-product. For brewing, rice husks are refined and steam-sterilized, making them an efficient, sustainable, and GMO-free filter material.
How to Use Rice Husk
When added to the brewing mash, rice husks prevent grain clumping, improving the flow rate during lautering and reducing the risk of stuck mash. They are especially beneficial in brews with high amounts of adjunct grains or malted barley, which may lack sufficient husk content.
Flavour Profile
Rice husks are tasteless, imparting no flavour to the beer. Their neutral nature ensures they support the brewing process without influencing the final flavour.
Enzymatic Activity
Rice husks lack enzymatic activity, making them suitable purely for filtration without affecting starch conversion.
Mashing
In the mash tun, rice husks separate the grains and allow water to flow freely through the mash bed. This improves lautering efficiency, enabling a cleaner, faster separation of wort from grains.
Combining with Other Malts
Rice husks complement malted barley or grains with high protein content, reducing mash viscosity and improving wort clarity. Ideal for adjunct-heavy or gluten-free recipes, they promote effective drainage in thick, protein-rich mashes.
Benefits of Rice Husk
- Enhances wort clarity and filtration
- Supports lautering in thick mashes
- Eco-friendly, biodegradable, and GMO-free
- Does not alter flavour or aroma
History
Traditionally considered a by-product, rice husks have become an essential tool in modern brewing, especially with the rise of adjunct grains. Steam-sterilized rice husks offer a more hygienic, effective filtration solution for both large-scale and craft breweries.
