Crisp Malt, founded in 1870, has been a pivotal part of the malting industry in the UK, renowned for producing and supplying premium malts for brewing and distilling. With operations spread across four countries, Crisp Malt is deeply rooted in Norfolk, England, where it began and expanded under the ownership of John Crisp, an 8th generation maltster. This expansion included the establishment of the Portgordon maltings in Scotland in 1979 and later growth into Germany and Poland, making it the 10th largest malting company globally.
Crisp Malt takes pride in its ability to combine traditional malting techniques with modern technology, ensuring the production of a wide variety of malts that cater to both large-scale breweries and craft brewers. The introduction of a specialty malt plant in Great Ryburgh is a testament to their innovative approach. This facility, valued at $8.9 million, is tailored for the craft brewing industry and features advanced technology such as vibrating spiral towers for roasting, enhancing the consistency and quality of the malts.
Crisp Malt emphasizes sustainability, partnering with local farmers in Norfolk and Scotland to ensure a steady supply of high-quality barley. This relationship not only supports local agriculture but also aligns with their commitment to sustainable practices.
