Description
What is Centennial?
Developed in the 1970s and released in 1990, Centennial is a product of American ingenuity, bred from a mix of Brewer’s Gold, Fuggle, and East Kent Golding. Its name pays homage to the 100-year anniversary of Washington State.
How to Use Centennial:
Centennial excels as a dual-purpose hop, bringing consistent bitterness when used in early boil additions. Its vibrant aroma makes it a natural choice for late-boil additions, while dry hopping enhances its floral and citrus top notes.
- Bitter Hop: Centennial’s high alpha acid content provides clean, assertive bitterness, making it a staple in hoppy beer styles.
- Aroma Hop: Its aromatic profile of citrus and floral notes creates a bright and inviting nose in any beer.
- Dry Hop: Dry hopping with Centennial introduces complex layers of grapefruit, lemon, and subtle piney undertones.
Flavour Profile:
Centennial offers a dynamic mix of citrus zest, floral sweetness, and piney sharpness, perfectly balanced by a subtle earthiness.
Combining with Other Hops:
Centennial pairs beautifully with Cascade, Chinook, or Amarillo, enhancing citrus-forward flavours or adding a floral touch to more resinous hops.
Benefits of Centennial:
Centennial's versatility makes it an invaluable tool in a brewer’s arsenal. It can impart bitterness, enhance aroma, or elevate a beer’s overall character without overpowering other ingredients.
Substitution:
- Substituting Centennial: Centennial can be substituted with Cascade for a lighter citrus profile or Amarillo for a more orange-forward taste.
- Centennial as a Substitute: Centennial serves as an excellent replacement for Cascade when a more robust bitterness or flavour is desired.
History:
Developed at Washington State University, Centennial was released in 1990 as a product of meticulous breeding. Its complex lineage includes Brewer’s Gold, Fuggle, East Kent Golding, and others, combining the best qualities of these heritage hops.
